Ultra-Orthodox and Haredi groups
continue their campaign to discredit and defame the Supreme Court and
Reform and Conservative Judaism
Supreme Court Justice Mishal Heshin,
decried the derogatory words of former Chief Safaradi Rabbi
and spiritual leader of the Ultra-Orthodox Shas Party, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef
in one of his weekly sermons who condemed the Justices of the Supreme
Court as "Evil, impure men, who reject Judaism and revolt
against it" At meetings of the Chief Rabbinate Council held in
Jerusalem, leading Ultra-Orthodox Rabbis again vociferously attacked
the legitimacy of Conservative and Reform Judaism. Rabbi Shloosh of
Netanya declared that "Reform Jews are worse than Christians and war
should be declared against them". Rabbi Shimon Ben Haim, former
Director General of the Ministry of Religion said "...if we allow
Reform Rabbis to perform marriages then why not Catholic priests?" In
an editorial in the Ultra-Orthodox newspaper of the Belzer Hassidim,
"HaMachaneh HaHardi", the editor, Rabbi Yisrael Eichler wrote
that "Reform Rabbis are further from Judaism than Christians and
Moslems and that they should be judged as filthy, lying, vermin who are
criminals, who brought about the holocaust on the Jewish
people". In an earlier event Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, declared in one
of his weekly sermons, that " Reform Jews should be vomited up...and
thrown out of the country. They should be forbidden from settling in
Israel...they have no place in Israel since they are a separate
people." In another event, Orthodox fanatics tore the mezuzah
off the door and threw excrement on the walls of a Conservative Synagogue.
